Synthetic Biology Companies Hiring: 19 Employers to Explore
By MedicalRecruiting.com Editorial Team · Published October 14, 2026
Synthetic biology careers extend well beyond the research scientist title. A review of 30 companies highlighted in Healthcare Drive's synthetic biology market post found specific jobs listed at 19 employers or employer groups, spanning DNA production, genome engineering, cell line development, laboratory automation, AI, quality, sales, and operations. The key is to distinguish a job that directly involves engineering biology from a broader opportunity at a company serving the same market.
Research checked October 14, 2026. This article is a dated snapshot of public employer career pages and their linked recruiting boards. A listed vacancy can close at any time. We have not confirmed hiring budgets, interviewed employers, or verified that every application remains open. Apply directly through the official links below.
From a market map to a practical career guide
The starting point was Healthcare Drive's “Who is Leading the Synthetic Biology Market?” post, which named 30 companies globally. Unlike a dedicated jobs list, that post did not establish that each employer was recruiting. We treated it as a research starting point—not a validated ranking by revenue, market share, growth, or hiring volume.
The list combines specialist synthetic biology companies with research-tool suppliers, software platforms, agricultural businesses, and diversified corporations. For job seekers, those distinctions matter. A fermentation scientist, laboratory software engineer, manufacturing technician, and agricultural sales manager may all work within the wider ecosystem, but their qualifications and daily responsibilities differ substantially.
We found named roles at 19 of the listed employers or employer groups. Eleven others remain in a separate follow-up list because their vacancies could not be established from the accessible sources reviewed. Danaher is counted once, as in the original post; the specific examples below are from Integrated DNA Technologies, not attributed to Cytiva.

Genome engineering, cell development, and biological research
Asimov: a direct route into cell line development
Asimov combines engineered cells, genetic tools, and software for advanced genetic design. Its official recruiting board listed Scientist and Senior Scientist roles in Lentiviral Vector Cell Line Development, Senior and Principal Scientist positions in Biologics Cell Line Development, Senior Scientist in Analytical Development, and Senior Program Manager. All were listed in Boston; the program manager role was explicitly hybrid.
What this means for candidates: This is one of the clearest examples of specialized wet-lab hiring in the review. The board displayed $120,000–$130,000 for the Scientist, Lentiviral Vector Cell Line Development role and $170,000–$190,000 for the Principal Scientist, Biologics Cell Line Development role. Those are role-specific advertised ranges, not sector-wide salary benchmarks or guaranteed offers.
Colossal Biosciences: genome engineering and animal expertise
Colossal's career page showed Scientist and Research Associate/Senior Research Associate roles in Genome Engineering and Cell Engineering, plus Senior Research Associate in Computational Biology, Senior Laboratory Automation Engineer, Clinical Veterinarian, and animal husbandry positions. The examples were listed in Dallas.
Career angle: Conservation and genetic engineering create a different employment mix from human therapeutics. “Clinical Veterinarian” is a veterinary position, not a physician vacancy. The general-interest community and summer internship interest posting were not counted as proof of a specific immediate opening.
Profluent: AI models need both computational and experimental teams
Profluent's employer-linked board listed Machine Learning Scientist roles in BioML, Pretraining, and Reinforcement Learning; Software Engineer, Machine Learning Platform; and Lead Scientist / Associate Director in Bioinformatics and Data Science. Its biology team also advertised CRISPR Specificity & Genomic Safety, formulation and delivery, and technology-development positions.
Career angle: AI-for-biology is not exclusively a software career path. Experimental validation, delivery, and genomic safety are separate specialties. Many computational listings specified Emeryville with two to three days on-site, while several biology roles were on-site. Computational Research and Software Engineering internships were also listed; check eligibility and timing individually.
Mammoth Biosciences: research informatics supporting CRISPR
Mammoth's career page displayed Senior Software Engineer I, Research Informatics in Brisbane, California, with a linked application. This is a concrete example of software hiring inside a gene-editing company.
Career angle: Do not infer a broad wave of research recruitment from the company's scientific focus. The named opening observed was in research informatics; a scientist seeking bench work should verify other live requisitions rather than assume this position fits.
Arzeda: protein testing and assay development
Arzeda's career page listed Scientist – Protein Testing and Scientist – Electrochemistry Assay Development and Testing in Seattle. The company focuses on protein design and its applications.
Career angle: Candidates should demonstrate experimental rigor and relevant assay experience, not just familiarity with protein-design terminology. An invitation to send a resume when no role fits is separate from these named vacancies.
Biomanufacturing, fermentation, and laboratory automation
Antheia: downstream processing and analytical development
Antheia uses biomanufacturing to support pharmaceutical supply chains. Its open roles included Research Associate II, DSP and Scientist I–II, Analytical Development, both on-site in Menlo Park. It also listed Sr. Director of Facilities Operations and Capital Projects as hybrid in Menlo Park.
Career angle: Downstream processing, analytical methods, and facilities investment are important parts of moving beyond an experimental result to reliable production. Employee stories elsewhere on the page were not treated as job advertisements, and the general-application entry was excluded.
LanzaTech: fermentation science and automation
LanzaTech's career page displayed a Scientist posting and a Laboratory Automation Engineer link for Skokie. The scientist description included bench-top bioreactors, anaerobic cultivation, fermentation data, chromatography, mathematical modeling, and documentation.
Career angle: This is an industrial biotechnology pathway rather than patient care. The scientist notice was hosted in a dated document as well as reproduced on the page; confirm that the requisition remains open before applying. Relevant fermentation and data-analysis experience matters more than a generic interest in sustainability.
Ginkgo Bioworks: autonomous labs and computational science
Ginkgo's current recruiting board showed software roles for Autonomous Lab, including scheduling and optimization, in Boston; Senior Mechatronics Engineer in Emeryville; and Scientist, AI/ML — Antibody Developability in California. Other examples included automation support, multiomics leadership, laboratory safety, product management, and US-remote government partnership development.
Career angle: The observed mix is broader than strain engineering. Reliable automation also needs hardware, instrument interfaces, software scheduling, and operational expertise. Software and automation-scientist internships provided additional entry routes. Ginkgo restricts unsolicited agency submissions; applicants should use its official board directly.
Culture Biosciences: bioreactors create engineering and commercial work
Culture Biosciences' career page listed Manufacturing Engineer / Sr. Manufacturing Engineer and Marketing Coordinator in South San Francisco. Senior Software Engineer and Software Engineer, Automation and Control were labeled remote.
Career angle: Bioprocess infrastructure combines physical equipment, software, and customer communication. A remote label without a country specification is not permission to work worldwide; confirm the permitted location and any travel or on-site expectations.
Pow.Bio: business development in biomanufacturing
Pow.Bio's site linked to a recruiting board listing Sr. Director of Business Development as remote and full-time. The company focuses on continuous fermentation for biomanufacturing.
Career angle: This is a senior commercial opportunity, not evidence of an open fermentation-scientist position. Candidates should examine the required business development record, technical understanding, territory, and travel expectations.
DNA, research tools, and the infrastructure supporting synthetic biology
Twist Bioscience: production, quality, science, and customer support
Twist's job opportunities page showed Manufacturing Associate – Gene Production, other production associate roles, QA Associate II, and material planning in Portland. Scientific examples included Senior Computational Scientist and Sr Bioinformatics Scientist in South San Francisco, and Research Associate II, Upstream Antibody Discovery in Quincy, Massachusetts.
Career angle: DNA synthesis creates hands-on production careers as well as advanced research jobs. The board also listed US-remote Customer Success Specialist and Customer Support Representative roles, regional sales, and field applications work. Match the exact territory: an APAC-remote listing is not interchangeable with US remote.
Ansa Biotechnologies: DNA synthesis hiring beyond bench science
Ansa's site linked to a board listing Head of Inside Sales, Supply Chain Coordinator, and Systems Integration Engineer, all in Emeryville. The company develops enzymatic DNA synthesis technology.
Career angle: A technically specialized company can be recruiting mainly for commercial, supply-chain, and systems work at a particular moment. These were the observed openings; the company's research mission is not a substitute for an advertised scientist vacancy.
Volta Labs: an on-site manufacturing pathway
Volta Labs' career page linked to Manufacturing Assembly Technician in Boston's Seaport district. The role involves building, calibrating, testing, and performing quality checks on its genomics sample-preparation instrument. The description advertised $26–$29 per hour and specified on-site attendance.
Read the contract terms: The listing header said full-time, but the description called it a contract role with potential to become permanent. Those terms are not necessarily incompatible, but applicants should confirm the employer, contract duration, benefits eligibility, and conversion expectations. The posting requires relevant assembly experience; it does not present a PhD as the entry requirement.
GenScript: scientific services and technical commercial roles
GenScript's career page listed Senior Scientist in AI & Big Data Center, Technical Account Manager (Malaysia), Sales Account Manager (Israel), Sales Manager (Industrial Enzymes), and marketing and administration roles. The AI/data scientist summary explicitly referenced tools for synthetic biology, protein engineering, and antibody engineering.
Career angle: Technical account management can combine scientific knowledge with customer-facing work, while research-tool development requires a different skill set. Confirm location and division on each linked posting rather than applying the site's global location filter to every job.
Danaher / Integrated DNA Technologies: operations and quality
The source post grouped Danaher with Cytiva and IDT. We verified specific examples on IDT's employer-filtered job board: Technician II positions, Quality Engineer, QA Complaint Analyst, and finance roles in Coralville, Iowa, along with multi-location operations project management and territory sales listings.
Career angle: Custom DNA and genomics products require controlled manufacturing and quality systems. Technician listings specified different daytime and overnight schedules; check the actual shift before applying. These are IDT examples, not evidence that Cytiva is hiring for the same positions.
Benchling: software for scientific workflows
Benchling's career page listed Technical Solution Architect in San Francisco/Boston, platform and full-stack software engineers, Product Manager – Developer Platform, Enterprise Account Executive in Indianapolis/Chicago, and a Zurich SMB Account Executive, among other roles.
Career angle: Benchling serves research and development rather than manufacturing a biological product itself. Candidates who understand laboratory workflows may find relevant customer-facing paths, but solution architecture and engineering still require the technical capabilities in their job descriptions.
Agriculture and diversified employers: check the business unit
InnerPlant: agricultural biology meets hardware, data, and sales
InnerPlant's employer-linked board listed Agronomic Modeler (Corn), hybrid in Davis; Director of Hardware Engineering & Manufacturing, on-site in Des Moines; Agronomy Sales Managers for Central Nebraska and Northwest Iowa; and Agronomy Services Lead. The territory-based roles were labeled remote.
Career angle: Living-sensor crops create opportunities outside a conventional biomedical laboratory. A remote agronomy sales role still has a defined geographic market and may involve field activity. Healthcare sales experience alone should not be assumed to meet agronomic requirements.
Thermo Fisher Scientific: broad life-sciences infrastructure opportunities
Thermo Fisher's R&D job board listed Algorithm and AI Senior/Staff Engineer and Senior Software Engineer in Singapore, Instrument Software Developer in Bangalore, and R&D – Electrical Engineer Technician in Marietta, Ohio.
Scope matters: These establish hiring at a major research-tools supplier, not that every role works on synthetic biology. For example, the Marietta description concerns laboratory and cold-storage equipment. Look for the product line, team, and scientific application before labeling a job “synthetic biology.”
dsm-firmenich: manufacturing and commercial careers across a broad portfolio
dsm-firmenich's recruiting site listed production operators in Wisconsin and Minnesota, Engineering Head in Vadodara, India, and Sales Director, Fine Fragrance Experience in Paris.
Scope matters: These are verified company-level examples, not proof of direct genetic-engineering or fermentation duties. A fragrance sales position and a spray-drying operator role should not be presented as equivalent to a synthetic biology research position. Filter by business, product, and technical responsibilities.
The other 11 companies: where hiring status needs confirmation
These names were reviewed but are not included in the verified employer count. Inaccessibility is not evidence that a company has stopped hiring, and an employer's career landing page is not itself a specific vacancy.
- Inari: its career page linked to an official Workday board, but the accessible board view did not expose individual roles. Staff profiles were not counted as vacancies.
- Illumina: its career page linked to Workday; specific job records were not readable in the view retrieved. This is an unverified-listing status, not a claim of no hiring.
- New England Biolabs: its official page linked to a Workday portal that did not expose individual vacancies in the retrieved view. NEB should not be confused with the separate BioLabs organization.
- Novonesis: its jobs page showed filters and alerts, but no readable job entries in the retrieved content. Its 12 career categories are not 12 confirmed vacancies.
- Perfect Day: its career page included employee testimonials and an openings section, but we did not verify a named current requisition. Testimonial job titles were excluded.
- bit.bio: its open-roles page referenced a public recruiting feed whose department entries contained no jobs when checked. That is a dated observation about the feed, not a forecast of future hiring.
- Inscripta: we could not establish a current vacancy from the company site. Search results for an unrelated Inscripta AI business were excluded.
- Viridos: the career route did not return enough readable content to confirm a specific job. General careers language in search results was not treated as a vacancy.
- Bolt Threads: the career route did not provide readable listings in this review. A careers contact address is not evidence of an open requisition.
- Latent Labs: we could not verify a matching official vacancy. Roles returned for the similarly named Latent Health were excluded because they belong to a different business.
- Synonym Biotechnologies: its website described a transition involving its Scaler tool and Roebling, while the linked Synonym recruiting board returned “Page not found.” We did not infer either open jobs or a complete corporate-status change from that notice.
How to choose the right synthetic biology career path
For wet-lab scientists: Compare cell line development at Asimov, genome engineering at Colossal, delivery and genomic safety at Profluent, assay work at Arzeda, and analytical development at Antheia. Match your actual methods and experimental record to the role. A broad biology degree does not make these specialties interchangeable.
For engineers and software professionals: Ginkgo, Mammoth, Culture Biosciences, Benchling, and Volta illustrate different ways to support laboratory work. Identify whether you want to build instruments, control automated processes, manage scientific data, or develop customer-facing software.
For manufacturing and quality candidates: Twist, IDT, and Volta show paths that do not necessarily require a research doctorate. Document production discipline, troubleshooting, traceability, safe working practices, and the specific quality systems you know. Check shift patterns, contract status, physical requirements, and on-site expectations.
For commercial and operations professionals: GenScript, Pow.Bio, Ansa, Benchling, and InnerPlant offer examples across business development, technical sales, supply chain, and customer-facing work. Demonstrate relevant customers, sales cycles, and technical products—not simply a general sales background.
For clinicians considering a move: Most of these vacancies are not patient-care jobs. Clinical experience may help in some life-sciences settings, but it does not replace required molecular biology, engineering, or manufacturing skills. Compare this guide with our medtech hiring roundup, which includes clinical research, education, and engagement examples.
Application checks before you send a resume
- Verify the exact employer and division. Similar names and shared corporate job boards can lead to the wrong company or business unit.
- Reopen the live listing. Confirm that applications are still accepted. General applications, talent communities, and staff biographies are not specific openings.
- Check location and employment terms. Remote does not mean worldwide; full-time does not necessarily mean permanent. Verify territory, travel, sponsorship, shifts, and any contract end date.
- Use evidence in your application. Highlight validated methods, scale-up results, production quality, reliable software, or commercial outcomes relevant to the position.
- Apply through employer-controlled channels. Follow the official career site to its linked platform. Be cautious about look-alike domains, application fees, or requests for financial information.

Frequently asked questions
Are all 30 companies in the original post hiring?
That was not established by the original market post. We found specific job examples at 19 employers or employer groups on October 14, 2026. The remaining 11 are separated because no current named vacancy was sufficiently verified through the accessible sources reviewed.
Do synthetic biology jobs require a PhD?
Some scientific positions may require a doctorate or equivalent experience, but the listings also include manufacturing, quality, assembly, software, sales, and supply-chain roles with different requirements. Check each position; an associate title does not automatically mean entry-level.
Are these all jobs directly engineering biology?
No. Some involve genome or cell engineering directly; others provide the software, instruments, production systems, sales, or operations that support the sector. The article explicitly distinguishes broader company-level vacancies at diversified suppliers.
Are remote positions available?
Yes, some listed software and commercial roles were labeled remote. Geography and territory restrictions still apply, and wet-lab, manufacturing, and hardware roles commonly specify on-site work. Confirm the individual job's current terms.
Sources and research limitations
The company universe comes from the Healthcare Drive LinkedIn post linked above. Primary evidence consists of the official career pages and employer-linked recruiting boards cited beside each company. We excluded unrelated namesakes, employee testimonials, and general-interest applications from our specific-job examples. We did not independently validate the source post's “top 30” market framing, market size, financial condition, commercial viability, or hiring budgets. No total vacancy count is claimed, since boards can duplicate roles across locations and include talent pools. Salary examples are copied from the identified postings and may change. Candidate-fit observations are editorial guidance, not employer promises. Recheck all terms before applying.
